What Is Renewable Energy?

Renewable energy is the energy we get from constantly replenishing natural resources. Think sun, wind, tides, biomass and geothermal heat. We can also add biofuels and hydrogen derived from renewable resources to our list. See the Glossary for more.

We call it “renewable” because there is a virtually limitless supply, unlike coal, oil and natural gas. By turning to these sources and limiting our use of nonrenewable fossil fuels, we can help create a clean and secure energy future for Oregon.

Working today for a greener tomorrow

Increasingly, creative companies are devoting themselves to developing new solutions and technologies to help us harness this bountiful clean energy.

Today, for example, innovations in solar photovoltaic cells and wind turbines are helping us capture valuable sun and wind energy.

And that’s just a start. Take a look at a map of the Northwest’s current and planned renewable energy projects. You’ll see that PGE is busy these days with a lot of solar, geothermal and wind projects.
